Main graph above. This section we will cover from Mile 381.6 to mile 416.5 Stage Six: Baker to Kelso, 34.90 miles. Elevation Gain: 2920'. Arrived in Kelso Sunday 8:26pm, 37 hours and 26 min Avg. Speed 11.13 mph From the 508 website "Leaving Baker, you climb a gradual but relentless 2500 feet in 20 miles (Mountain Section Eight). It may be heating up, so drink plenty. A long descent leads to Kelso at mile 418." Coming out of Baker there is a 21 mile climb that drags on and on. I had a slight tailwind and starting motoring up the climb. Along the way David Goggins came up alongside and we chatted briefly. I felt fine on this climb but slowed down as I neared the top. I remember it was cooler than previous years and that's fine by me. This is notoriously the hottest section of the course for me. I wouldn't want to make a habit of having 70 mph headwinds through Death Valley just to get cooler weather on this stage. But it sure was nice for it to be cooler on the Kelbaker climb. The following photographs are some of my favorite from the entire event. Brandy was spot-on in capturing these amazing images. Even though a picture is worth a thousand words I thought I would tell you what emotions I was experiencing at the time. I paying respect to one of my friends for his courageous ride. David Goggins was recovering from heart surgery and here he was racing the 508. Additonally, I said to him "Can you believe that shit we went through last night?" I was referring to the ridiculous windstorm that claimed many victims the night before. We both looked at each other and without even saying I could sense "Damn that was some shit but we're still here!" Upon arriving at Kelso I had completed 416.5 miles and 29,776 feet of climbing |
